No one can deny that in this technology driven world today, we are completely surrounded by pollutants, and the food that makes its journey from farm to plate is definitely not in its purest form. It has undergone several development stages, resulting in loss of nutrients. So the food that we have, believing we are getting the best nutrients doesn’t really meet our expectation. What happens then is that we are caught up in a series of diseases, and are left wondering where we went wrong.
To fill this gap, what is required is a sensible approach to complementing our diet with food supplements that meet our requirements. This should be taken under supervision, and a thorough research .The importance of exercise cannot be ignored, even with the usage of supplements.

The science of Nutraceuticals comprises of these four important building blocks.
- Proteins: Protein is a key component in the muscle building process. A complete chain action of all 22 amino acids is required, which however may not be possible for the majority of the youth, keeping in mind the changes in diet and food availability over the past decade. Nine out of 22 amino acids are not available in the human body, and necessitates the intake through food. Fast food, also known as junk food is the norm. This only satiates the taste buds without providing the essential protein. Add to that the stressful lifestyle, and intake of caffeine, and thus most of us are missing out on the important proteins necessary for the recovery of the muscles.
- Vitamins: Vitamin inadequacy is another rising concern for today`s generation. Unlike yesteryears, the food eaten today is drained of most vitamins and minerals, due to refinement of food, even the seasonal fruits and vegetables are no more the same. Hence even if we eat adequate fruits & vegetables, there is no assurance that it is really beneficial and thus there is a need to compensate for the same by popping multi vitamins.
- Omega 3-6-9 : Youngsters in the age group of 25 to 40 are suffering from lifestyle diseases like arthritis, blood sugar, osteoporosis, whereas this can be avoided by a simple step of utilizing the now available food supplements, in addition to the normal food diet to compensate for loss of vital omega force.
- Pro-biotics: An essential requirement which was earlier easily available in natural foods is now missing in today`s diet due to excessive processing of the foods. Check out the curd for probiotics and you will face the truth. Supplements available in the market in the name of probiotics may or may not have the sufficient required quantity of probiotics, leading to a need for structured supplements that fulfil the required nutritional inefficiency.
Most of today`s generation are not aware of the availability of Nutraceuticals, which can enhance the quality of food intake by providing supplements. There are still lots of myths for the use of Nutraceuticals, and people are under the impression that there are bound to be side effects if we use food supplements.
There is an adage “Take care of your body, it’s the only place you have to live” which is more and more relevant in today`s age of technology. Research has shown that if we abuse our body, the body will react and give us back in the same coin. If you take good care of the needs of your body, you stand to enjoy good health throughout your life, and age gracefully. Everyone has a right to good health, and the best way to do that is arm yourself with knowledge that will help you achieve the goals of a healthy life.
Technology has made inroads in all sectors of life. With advanced technology, more and more people are leading sedentary lifestyles. A device in hand ensures that sleep deprivation is the norm. So in the name of technology, we have sacrificed two important assets, namely quality of sleep and lack of exercise which has a direct impact on our health. Apart from this, there are few other important factors that affect our health.
With changes in lifestyle, the structure of our food pyramid has undergone a sea change. The food pyramid which had earlier more emphasis on the the protein-carbohydrate-fat pyramid is now out of date, as changing lifestyle require change in diet. Although protein is still the key component, the proportion of fat and carbohydrate needs to be adjusted and inclusion of vitamins and minerals is highly recommended by nutritionists.
The science of better nutrition emphasis on a balanced diet not only at the micro nutrient level, but also at the macro nutrient level. The type of stressful and sedentary lifestyle leaves little room for the majority of people to achieve optimum health. Exercise, Yoga and meditation are still important for maintaining optimum health and nothing can replace that. The youth of today has to make a conscious effort to ensure that he does not compromise on his health. In today`s age, the food while travelling from the farm to the consumer`s plate loses its original taste texture and nutrients again due to advanced technology, and thus requires a support, if we are to maintain absolute health without falling prey to the now common diseases of high Blood pressure, diabetes, heart strokes . This is where the food supplements play an important role and therefore fill the gap, by providing us important nutrients to maintain our energy levels, to strengthen our immune system, protecting our body cells from the harmful effects of pollution.
